One of the biggest advantages of electric scooters is low maintenance. No engine oil changes, no spark plugs, no clutch plates. But that doesn’t mean zero maintenance. Here are 10 essential maintenance tips to keep your electric scooter running perfectly for years.
1. Check Tyre Pressure Every 2 Weeks
Correct tyre pressure improves range by 10-15% and ensures safe handling. Check pressure every 2 weeks. Most electric scooters recommend 28-32 PSI for front and 32-36 PSI for rear. Under-inflated tyres reduce range significantly and wear out faster.
2. Charge Battery Correctly
Follow the 20-80 rule: keep battery between 20% and 80% for daily use. Only charge to 100% before long trips. Avoid deep discharge below 10%. This simple habit can extend battery life by 30-40%.
3. Keep Brakes Clean and Adjusted
Electric scooters use regenerative braking which reduces brake pad wear, but pads still need inspection every 5,000 km. Clean brake discs with brake cleaner spray. Squeaking brakes indicate pad replacement needed.
4. Clean and Lubricate Chain/Belt
If your electric scooter uses a chain drive (like Revolt RV400), lubricate it every 1,000 km. Belt drive scooters (most Ola, Ather models) are maintenance-free but inspect for cracks every 10,000 km.
5. Software Updates
Always install OTA (Over-The-Air) updates when available. These updates fix bugs, improve range, add features, and optimize motor performance. Keep your scooter connected to WiFi regularly to receive updates.
6. Wash Properly
Avoid high-pressure water jet directly on the motor, battery, and electrical connectors. Use a damp cloth for the body and regular water for wheels. Never submerge the scooter in water for cleaning. Most scooters are IP67 rated but prevention is better.
7. Check Suspension
Front fork and rear shock absorber should be checked every 10,000 km. Listen for unusual sounds while riding over bumps. Leaking suspension fluid indicates service needed.
8. Inspect Electrical Connectors
Check all visible electrical connectors for corrosion, rust, or looseness every 3 months. Especially important during monsoon season. Apply dielectric grease on connectors to prevent corrosion.
9. Service Schedule
Follow your manufacturer’s recommended service schedule – typically every 5,000-7,500 km or 6 months. Even though EVs have fewer parts, regular checkups catch problems early.
10. Store Properly When Not In Use
If not using your scooter for more than 2 weeks, charge battery to 50-60% before storage. Park in a cool, covered area. Start the scooter once a week and ride for 5 minutes to keep systems active.
Annual Maintenance Cost
Following these tips, your annual maintenance cost should be approximately Rs 1,500-2,500 compared to Rs 5,000-8,000 for a petrol scooter. That’s a saving of Rs 3,000-5,500 per year on maintenance alone.
